EVALUATING A SUITABLE HANG TAG

Adhesive hooks are a very reliable, quick and easy way to add a hanging facility to a product or pack.  However, if some simple precautions aren't taken into account, problems may occur.

The following is a guide to check the suitability of an adhesive hook and if followed, the chance of difficulty will be significantly reduced.

Low Energy

Surfaces.

These are normally plastic based products such as polypropylene, polythene, polyolefin and pvc (not exhaustive list).  Such materials can have a greasy or waxy surface that prevents adhesive bonding 100%.  You should check for the following:

(a)  Initial adhesion - can the Hang Tag or Hook easily be knocked off?

(b) Long term adhesion - does the Hang Tag or Hook peel or slide off over a period of time?

Working Temperature of Adhesive. The ideal working temperature range is between +5oC and + 25oC.  The ideal application temperature range is 10oC and over.  Outside these temperatures, the tags will still work but the reduced adhesion has to be allowed for in the choice of Hang Tab or Hook and the method of application.
Storage Temperatures. The tackiness of adhesive improves with higher temperatures and deteriorates in lower temperatures.  Specifically i9n the winter months, but not always, the temperature of the warehouse where your hooks are stored may affect how well the tags initially bond to your packs when applying.  Ideally the boxes should be opened and kept in temperatures above 10oC at least 2 hours prior to application.  This situation does not affect the normal use and adhesive hooks can be used in much lower temperatures once applied.
Fibrous Materials Normally these are paper and cardboard.  Usually these are some of the best materials to adhere to.  However, if the grade of cardboard is not very dense or of a good quality, it is possible for the fibres to coat the adhesive and part from the main board.  The effect is that the Hang Tabs or hooks fall off and appear to have no adhesive.  In reality, the fibres have prevented the adhesive from adhering to the paper or cardboard.  Always test for this before proceeding with packing a job.

Perfumed Products.

Perfumed or scented products such as Air Fresheners or Pot Pori can migrate through packaging and attack adhesive.  Please check over as long a period as possible if using adhesive hooks or Hang Tags to hang such packs.

We strongly recommend that all adhesive Hang Tags and Hooks are tested on the final pack choice before proceeding with an order.  We are always happy to evaluate products on your behalf or advise as best we can over the phone.
